The status of health in women in Punjab remains poor by many standards. Due to socio-cultural gender bias; women and girls unequivocally face the greatest challenges that are barriers to good health and wellbeing. Like many states in India, even the natural life occurrences such as menarche (onset of the menstruation cycle) become a growth hurdle for more than 50% of Punjab's young women and girls.
Along with other socio-cultural factors, the taboos about menstruation impact girls' and women's emotional state, lifestyle, and most importantly, health. A lot of girls drop out of school with the onset of menstruation, diminishing their potential as individuals and as a part of the community.
With a primary focus on awareness and education, our Women's health initiative is an instrument to create awareness among women - through knowledge building, financial independence, and an improved sense of decision-making – breaking the transgenerational cycle of bias.
